A decarbonization-focused smart building platform that enables real estate teams to report, manage, and improve building performance.

Hatch Data became an independent, employee-owned venture in 2019 and was named the leading decarbonization platform for real estate in the US, serving more than 2,500 properties representing more than 500 million square feet of commercial real estate. The company was a spinoff of clean-tech pioneer EnerNOC.

Problem Space

Real estate owners and operators are busy people. We needed to provide a user experience that would deliver the right information at the right time, so users could get in, get answers, and get on with their day.

It was also clear that supporting collaboration between ownership, property management, and facility engineering teams would be vital to successfully delivering on the key workflows I worked to identify using the following methods:

  • Discovery interviews

  • User persona development

  • Journey mapping

  • Competitive and adjacent industry research

Branding Process

I worked closely with the entire team to democratically develop our brand identity. This included deciding on our logo mark, fonts, and style guide essentials.

I then worked closely with engineering team members on the development of our design system that would consider these elements.

Product Process

Design and iteration processes are a cross-collaborative effort. I regularly engage with customers to build an understanding of their experiences, pain points, and desires. I also leverage the expertise and unique perspectives of product management, engineering, data science, and customer success team members. I am enabled to make the decisions for the design and user experience of the product by referencing insights gleaned from:

  • Brainstorming & workshops

  • User Interviews

  • Surveys

  • Prototype testing

  • Beta testing

  • User analytics for tracking and reporting (Mixpanel, Hubspot)


Key Workflows

Similarly, our user’s processes require collaboration and transparency. Varying fidelities of user flows and site maps were developed for every workstream to identify points of failure and areas of opportunity for the user experience.

 
  • On-demand access for users to all data captured on the platform, in a variety of formats including web and mobile.

  • Guided discovery to help users expedite triage, quickly answer commonly asked questions, benchmark performance, and get insight on future operational choices.

  • Continuous monitoring and applied data science to identify and quantify high-value improvement opportunities that achieve energy, maintenance, and comfort goals for users.

  • A unified repository for users to view, prioritize, implement, and verify operational and capital improvement opportunities.
